Conferencia trata de identidad a través de los
artes
BOISE— Luis J. Rodríguez, one of the leading Chicano writers in the country,
will be the keynote speaker for the fifth biannual Mexican American Studies
Conference hosted by Boise State University Tuesday, March 11, and Wednesday,
March 12 in the Student Union. Titled "La Raza: Identity and Resistance Through
the Arts," the free conference features several noted Hispanic scholars,
including Constance Cortez, Roberto Dansie, Jorge Durand and Theresa Martínez.
The conference is one of the signature events of Boise State's Cultural and
Ethnic Diversity Board. In addition to the speakers, the two-day event features
14 panels and workshops on issues such as Idaho folk artists, the history of
Mexican Americans in Idaho and multicultural literature; two performances of
"Latins Anonymous," a play by Luisa Leschin, Armando Molina, Rick Najera and
Diane Rodriguez; the OELA dancers (Organización de Estudiantes Latino
Americanos); and a dance. Rodríguez is the author of eight books ranging from
nonfiction to poetry to children's books. He is best known for his 1993 memoir
of gang life titled "Always Running; La Vida Loca, Gang Days in L.A." An
international best seller, the memoir garnered Rodriguez a Carl Sandburg
Literary Award, a Chicago Sun-Times Book Award and was designated a New York
Times Notable Book. He will deliver his keynote address, "Hearts and Hands:
Creating Community in Violent Times," at 6:30 p.m. March 11. He will speak again
at 10 a.m. March 12. Cortez teaches and publishes in two fields: colonial art of
Mexico and contemporary Chicano art. Her most recent studies include a show she
curated and an exhibition she edited titled "Imágenes e Historias/Images and
Histories: Chicana Altar-Inspired Art." Durand is a professor-investigator in
the Department for the Study of Social Movements at the Universidad de
Guadalajara. He is co-author of "Beyond Smoke and Mirrors: Mexican Immigration
in an Era of Economic Integration," which looks at U.S. immigration policies
between 1986 and 1996. Dansie is a nationally acclaimed expert on issues of
cultural diversity. An award winning speaker, trainer and clinical psychologist,
he has won a number of awards including the National Award for Community
Development, the prestigious Golden Medallion from the National Indian Health
Board and the Cesar Chavez Award. Martinez is a professor of sociology at the
University of Utah, where she teaches courses on racial and ethnic relations,
deviant behavior and juvenile delinquency. She currently serves as a board
member for the Salt Lake Legal Defenders and the Utah Hispanic American

Mexicanoamericanos patrocinada por la Universidad Estatal en Boise (BSU) el
martes, 11 de marzo y el miércoles, el 12 de marzo en el Centro Estudiantil. La
conferencia gratuita titulada “La Raza: Identidad y Resistencia a través de las
Artes” incluye varios destacados eruditos hispanos, como Constance Cortez,
Roberto Dansie, Jorge Durand y Theresa Martínez. La confrencia es uno de los
eventos destacados para la Mesa de Diversidad Etnica y Cultural de BSU. Además
de los oradores, el evento de dos días incluye 14 discusiones y talleres acerca
de tales asuntos de artistas folklóricos de Idaho, la historia de los
Mexicanoamericanos en Idaho, y literatura multicultural; dos presentaciones de
“Latins Anonymous”, un acto dramático por Luisa Leschin, Armando Molina, Rick

CALDWELL— The public is invited to lose themselves in literature and art for an
afternoon with Sandra Cisneros, a successful Mexicanamerican writer. Cisneros
will participate in a free presentation of her literary work Monday, March 3,
2003 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Albertson College of Idaho in Jewett Auditorium,
Caldwell. This community event is free of charge and intended for youth,
teachers, and the Latino community. Groups of ten people or more, should call
Mari de León at (208)452-1320 or Guisela Bahruth at (208)344-7669 to be included
in a seating chart. One of Cisneros’ first books, “The House on Mango Street”
featured short stories about her childhood growing up in a barrio. The popular
book has two million copies in print and is available in both English and
Spanish. A second book of short stories titled “Woman Hollering Creek and Other
Stories,” followed the success of her first book. “Caramelo” is Cisneros’ first
full-length work in ten years. Her first novel is available in English and
Spanish.
